Gage's adaptation of the lesbian classic by Gale Wilhelm. Originally published in 1935, the novel was republished in the 1950's, and then again in 1984 by Naiad Press.
Gage has adapted the novel as a screenplay, celebrating the life of butch sculptor Jan Morale, her naive young girlfriend Victoria, and the wealthy and married Madeleine who is determined to keep them apart. The novel is set in San Francisco during the Depression, and it captures the complicated world of lesbians whose passion is pitted against their tremendous economic and social vulnerabilities.
